What is Shadowclad plywood?
Shadowclad is a premium plywood crafted from sustainably grown New Zealand radiata pine. The species provides wood that is both lightweight and strong.
The Shadowclad plywood manufacturing process involves arranging wood veneers at right angles, to enhance strength and durability. The veneers are bonded with synthetic phenolic (PF) resin, creating a robust Type A bond. Thus, while these plywood panels are primarily for protective and decorative claddings, they are as strong as structural plywood.
Best of all, the radiata pine brings a natural beauty to the ply. That beauty complements a wide range of architectural styles and will enhance the executed design of any project.
Use Shadowclad for exterior cladding, interior walls or ceilings, and you’ll have elegant architectural features that will endure for years.
Shadowclad Plywood Main Features
As a Shadowclad plywood wholesaler, we offer two main lines of Shadowclad plywood.
- Treated Panels: Ideal for exterior cladding; these are given the H3.1 LOSP waterproofing treatment. This ensures dimensional stability and prevents discolouration. These panels comply with AS/NZS 1604.3 standards for wood product preservation.
- Untreated Panels: Perfect for interior walls and ceilings; these panels offer more flexibility for staining, painting or other decorative treatments, making them suitable for indoor use.
For both product lines, you get:
- Available sizes in 2440mm and 2745mm long panels
- Band-sawn sheet surface for a consistent tactile finish
- Interlocking vertical shiplap joints for quick, easy, and weatherproof installation
- Low formaldehyde emissions rating (tested according to AS/NZS 2098.11 standards)
- Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified (SCS-COC-001316)
- Accreditation from the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australia (EWPAA)
- Guaranteed strict compliance with AS/NZS 2269 structural plywood guidelines
Range of Profiles and Finishes
As a further refinement, we also offer Shadowclad in the following finishes.
Natural Groove
Shadowclad Natural Groove is an uncoated plywood panel, but it also has H3 LSOP waterproofing treatment. It features deep grooves 9mm wide and 5mm deep every 150mm across the sheet.
It’s perfect for adding defining lines or texture to your finished design. It can take staining and painting and performs well in weather-exposed applications (e.g., vertical exterior cladding).
Natural Texture
Shadowclad Natural Texture is another uncoated cladding option, suitable for exteriors and interiors. While this also has H3 LOSP weatherproofing like grooved Shadowclad panels, this finish retains its solid band-sawn surface texture.
These panels make a stylish lining for internal dry installations. You can have it painted, stained, or clear-coated to match your building’s specifications and design.
Ultra Groove
Shadowclad Ultra Groove combines the classic grooves of Natural Groove with the efficiency of exterior grade pre-priming. Its unique primer coating powder formulation offers a consistent, reliable undercoat. That means you can have your construction team apply top coating immediately on-site. There’s no need to worry about wasting time on applying expensive wet primers.
Ultra Groove’s primer coating has an average film build of 60-80 microns. This provides the plywood up to two to three times the thickness of traditional wet primers.
You can use Ultra Groove for vertical exterior applications. Each panel also comes with H3 LOSP treatment for better protection against water damage.
Ultra Texture
Shadowclad Ultra Texture is the pre-primed version of Natural Texture. Like Ultra Groove, Ultra Texture has the same exterior grade primer coating of 60-80 microns, which provides the same benefits as a three-coat paint system.
Because Ultra Texture has that solid band-sawn surface, it’s the easiest panel to work with for most painting and staining methods. The top coating can be quickly applied. Plus, with the H3 LOSP waterproofing treatment, Ultra Texture is a durable building material and will retain coats of paint or stain for a longer time.
Flashings
Use Shadowclad Flashings to add complementary details to Shadowclad panels, especially for exterior applications. This range includes internal and external angles, horizontal and inter-storey Z’s and a cavity base closure. These are available in aluminium or stainless steel.
