FA Mitchell is one of the leading marine plywood suppliers in Sydney and across Australia.
We carry an extensive range of marine grade plywood and other wood products, all certified with zero formaldehyde emission rating as well as 100% sourced from local plantations.
What is Marine Plywood?
Marine ply is an exterior grade, waterproof plywood that can withstand the elements. To produce this, manufacturers glue together plies using undiluted phenolic resin. Manufacturers refer to this resin as “unextended” because it is not diluted in any way.
This superior adhesive is what makes marine ply far sturdier than other commercial plywood. It’s also what makes marine grade plywood completely waterproof and best suited for outdoor applications.
General Features
As one of Australia’s premier plywood wholesalers, we supply only marine plywood that adheres to Australian Standard 2272 (AS 2272). Of the many standards used to gauge the quality of marine ply, this standard is currently the strictest one in the world.
For the plywood to pass this test, it must have A-grade face veneers and a high-quality interior core. A high-quality core virtually eliminates the risk of moisture penetration and thus counters the possibility of ply degradation. The undiluted phenolic resin is responsible for the moisture-resistant nature of the ply.
Marine plywood that meets AS 2272 is effective against adverse weather conditions and is suitable for any exterior surrounding. The other variant that complies with British Standard BS 1088 is only suitable for interior applications. Meanwhile, marine ply with B-grade veneer faces and relatively poor interior core quality can pass the British Standard test.
Not only is there a variation in appearance between the two, but the difference also shows in the price. While BS 1088 ply has restricted use, marine ply meeting Australian standards are far more versatile, if a bit pricier.
Advantages of Using Marine Plywood
Below are some characteristics of marine ply that make it an excellent choice for your projects, especially in high-moisture environments.
- Good water resistance
- Excellent surface finish
- Good density
- Durable
- Has uniform strength
- Flexible
- Good termite resistance
- Easily available
Marine-grade ply products offer good resistance to water and moisture. Additional rot and termite treatments also help extend the life of plywood products significantly.
Uses
Marine grade plywood is a versatile product, both for interior and exterior applications. Its uses can range from stationary to mobile construction projects, especially those that often come in contact with water. Some examples of these include:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens
- Decks
- Patios
- Porches
- Docks
- Boats
Your Marine Plywood Supplier in Sydney and NSW
FA Mitchell is a trusted supplier of wood products since 1933. We supply waterproof plywood throughout Australia from our Sydney warehouse and wood cutting facility.
Our premium quality plywood is manufactured from chosen species of wood. Species selections are determined largely by their densities, impact resistance, and pliability. For instance, Hoop Pine, a species designated as marine, passes the zero-formaldehyde rating test and is audited by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA).
Waterproof plywood required for pontoons and boat hulls needs preservative treatment for achieving higher durability. However, the marine ply supplied by overseas distributors often lacks the “EWPAA-Tested” stamp. This means that the reliability of the mills they were manufactured in, not to mention the supply chain they passed through before reaching you, cannot be assured.
